The Project:

Noticias Telemundo worked with Dizplai for their US Election 2020 coverage, creating an expansive social media-driven experience with audience generated content live on the in-studio touch screen.

The Challenge

For one of the biggest and most talked about elections in recent memory, Telemundo required a platform capable of sourcing, moderating, and editing social content in a number of languages, but also a solution that would integrate into the broadcaster’s workflows and display HTML graphics on the live screens.

To help the audience understand what was being talked about on social media, the production team ingested content from trusted Twitter profiles and translated the tweets into Spanish. Published to two interactive in-studio screens, built by Dizplai, one screen displayed a list of who had tweeted, and the other showed the full text of the tweet once selected. This was devised and built within one week, and the production team were able to learn and use it within a couple of hours.

News organisations such as Telemundo, are building increasingly complex studio presentations, where presenters are surrounded by multiple screens to interact with computer-generated graphics that help to illustrate the narrative. The US election of 2020 presented many opportunities for in-studio storytelling using social media and other data, which Telemundo presented to their Spanish speaking US and Latin American audience.
